How To Create Drive-In Cinema Date Night Tote Bags With Cricut

How To Create Drive-In Cinema Date Night Tote Bags With Cricut

There's no need to travel far from home to have a good time this summer. Make the most of your hometown outings - create these easy drive-in cinema date night his and hers tote bags with the help of Cricut. Nothing says summer like cuddling up to watch a drive-in movie with some tasty snacks.

I don't know about you, but I don't pack light for the drive-in. (Truth be told, I don't pack light for any outing.) I need a sweater and a blanket in case it gets cold - maybe some fuzzy socks - a water bottle, a portable phone charger and, of course, snacks. That’s why I thought it would be fun to diy his and hers tote bags for drive-in cinema date nights.

Each tote bag has theme-appropriate iron-on movie images, such as popcorn and tickets, along with "his" and "hers" iron-ons to keep all those drive-in necessities neat and organized. Of course, you can modify the bags to suit yourself and your partner - maybe your diy iron-on tote bags are "hers" and "hers" - use your own favourite colours so you know which bag is yours. You can also personalize these drive-in cinema tote bags with names. It would be fun for kids to have their own bags too!

Big Ideas, Simply Explained from DK Books

Over spring break we enjoyed a "staycation" of sorts (if you call de-cluttering the house a staycation). We had some extra time to enjoy our giant collection of books, including our most recent finds - two wonderful books from DK's Big Ideas Boutique. These books tackle big topics (think philosophy, science and even Sherlock Holmes) with simple explanations and great big, beautiful pictures. My husband picked out The Movie Book from the boutique because he and I have long been extreme movie addicts.

Our VHS Collection & Vintage Bliss Tuesdays Linky Party #39

I'm afraid I am guilty of adding to my VHS collection long after it was sensible to do so. But I would spot a great movie for just 50 cents or a buck at a library sale or a thrift store and I couldn't resist! As I'm now midway through the second month of my 4-month purge, I spent some time on Sunday going through our VHS collection.

Popcorn Time & Our Top 5 Family Movies (Giveaway)

We are a family of movie lovers. There are few activities we like more than curling up on the sofa with some popcorn to watch our favourite family flicks. So I asked the family to join me in picking our top 5 family movies. It wasn't easy, because there are plenty of great family movies, but we narrowed our selections by choosing movies that all four of us enjoy (ie. they are entertaining for both boys and girls as well as Mom and Dad). So no Barbie movies (although my guilty confession is that I love those Barbie movies!) Read on for the list.

But first, a snack. When the January blues hit, you need to take advantage of life's small pleasures - like hot cocoa, warm blankets and cuddly dogs. On a recent movie night, we enjoyed treats courtesy of Popcorn, Indiana - Popcorn, Indiana popcorn is made from non-GMO corn, without added preservatives, colourings or artificial flavours.

5 Ways to Fire Up Your Relationship, With Sex Tape (The Movie) & A Giveaway

I am addicted to movies. I have seen more movies than I can count. My husband and I even took elective film classes together in university. Nowadays, however, we are more into lighthearted comedy than film noir. With the stresses of everyday life, it’s nice to kick back and have a good laugh.

Bad Teacher is one of our comedy favourites, so we’re looking forward to seeing Sony Pictures' Sex Tape, which once again pairs up the funny duo of Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. Sex Tape has a theme that many of us long-married folks are all too familiar with (well maybe not the sex tape part, but some of the other stuff).

Insta-Friday in real life, small pleasures

It's time once again for a look back at the week using simple, sweet cell phone photos. I am sooo ready for March and any warmth it might bring. It is freezing here today and we are looking forward to any days with temps above zero!

In times like these, what gets me through are life's simple pleasures. Like food. Yummy baked food! I pulled out a lovely, cast iron flower muffin pan today. My mom gave it to me a while back, but I had yet to use it. The banana chocolate chip muffins came out shaped like a tulip, a lily, an iris, etc. It was a suitable reminder that spring is on the way...some day.

Getting My Shopping Fix

When I wrote about how I store all of my thrifted and inherited dishes about a month ago, it really made me think twice about doing any more thrift store shopping. How many dishes can one family use, after all?

This past weekend, I once again visited the small town near my parents' home ("the cottage"). I couldn't resist checking out the local thrift shop, which has all sorts of amazing vintage dishes. But I was strong. I decided anything I bought would have to be useful in some way, and I only bought two small things. I plan to use this pretty dish, above, to hold soap in our master bathroom. It would also make a nice candy dish but candy wouldn't last long out in the open around here. It cost me $2.

For The Love of Movies (Book Review)

A few weeks ago, we took the kids to see the movie Epic. While I'm not normally a fan of lengthy previews, I was happy to see that a number of promising kids' movies are coming out this summer. As a parent, it's a relief when you come across a movie the whole family can enjoy.

Father's Day

Shhh...don't tell my husband about this post. He really doesn't like to be featured on the blog. What can I do? I have to share some Father's Day pics. Like the kids delivering Daddy's breakfast tray, above. He clearly wasn't sleeping, but rather taking some time for his favourite hobby - playing guitar. Notice Jolene the dog on the right. She made some strong attempts at getting the food from the tray.

Gilmore Girls and a $50 gift card giveaway

I was lucky enough to get a few special treats for Christmas this year. I always ask for chocolate, organic body wash, a scented candle and a chick flick. This year, I mentioned to my husband that I would like to re-watch Gilmore Girls. I started watching that particular TV show a few years in, so I am eager to go back and start from the beginning. My husband got me three of the seven seasons for Christmas, but he wasn’t able to find the first season.

Enter CardSwap.ca. CardSwap credited my account with $75 to review their online gift card buying and selling service.

Insta-Friday in real life

Happy Friday!

For those with little ones who returned to school this week, I hope everything went well. And to my teacher friends, I hope you are not too traumatized.

I am once again sharing cell phone photos from the past week. I don’t have many. I will have more in the future, since I finally ordered my own cell phone, so I don’t have to use my husband’s anymore.
My phone arrived today…and left again. Why is it that the courier ALWAYS comes during the one hour you leave the house? Does this happen to you too?

Favourite Holiday Films

I am a movie addict. You name it, I’ve probably seen it. Let’s face it, there’s not much to watch on TV nowadays (although I just finished watching and loving the first four seasons of Mad Men on Netflix).

The lack of suitable TV shows makes me turn to movies for entertainment all the more. So, here it is, my tried and true list of favourites to watch during the holiday season. Although I took a couple of electives in film when I was in university, you won’t see any Kurosawa here. The older I get, the more I watch movies just for fun—they don’t necessarily have to be funny, but they have to at least be absorbing and compelling in some way. Grab some popcorn, snuggle up and enjoy!

1.       Home for the Holidays (1995)

This is a Thanksgiving classic, directed by Jodie Foster. I’m going to take this description right off the package, because it pretty much sums it up. “In a span of 36 hours, Claudia Larson (Holly Hunter) has managed to lose her job, make out with her boss and learn that her daughter (Claire Danes) is planning to go all the way. But Claudia’s fortunes actually take a turn for the worse when she flies home to endure an even more gruelling trial: the family Thanksgiving!” One thing they should have mentioned is that Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious as Claudia’s gay brother, who is also home for the holidays and making Claudia’s life more difficult with his practical jokes. You will love this dysfunctional family, including the mom, played by Anne Bancroft, and the lovable dad, played by Charles Durning.

2.       The Ice Storm (1997)

This Ang Lee film has Kevin Kline, Joan Allen and Sigourney Weaver portraying life as parents in the 70s. Memorable moments include the wife-swapping key party (let’s hope that didn’t happen in my neighbourhood) and the beautifully depicted but tragic ice storm that causes the characters to re-adjust their priorities in a big way.

3.        The Family Man (2000)

Somehow Nicolas Cage is the perfect fit for this tale of a single, wealthy Wall Street trader who one day at Christmastime magically wakes up in a suburban New Jersey home with a wife (Tea Leoni) and two kids—the life he might have had if he had made different choices as a young man. I’m not saying it’s not predictable, but I never fail to enjoy watching as he comes to appreciate all of the lovely imperfections of everyday life with kids.

4.       The Family Stone (2005)

They call this a comedy, but it’s not all fun. Sarah Jessica Parker plays the uptight and ultra-conservative Meredith Morton so well that her comments are often cringe-worthy. But, when Morton leaves Manhattan to meet her boyfriend Everett Stone’s tight-knit family during the holidays, she meets her match with Everett’s mother (Diane Keaton) and sister (Rachel McAdams). Thank God for Everett’s brother (Luke Wilson) for lightening things up a bit.

5.       Love Actually (2004)

This is the only one on the list that my husband won’t watch with me. Yes, it’s pretty much a chick flick. But, I’m not apologizing. I love the way several storylines skillfully intertwine in this feel good romantic comedy, which is set during Christmastime. As the cover says, the movie features an all-star cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman (who brings me to my next selection).

6.       Die Hard (1988)

Okay, so this one doesn’t exactly scream holiday cheer, but the sentiment is there. New York City detective John McClane is newly arrived in Los Angeles to spend the Christmas holidays with his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia) and kids. As he waits for his wife’s office party to finish, terrorists take control of the building.  While McClane wages a one-man war on the terrorists, including leader Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), he also learns to re-evaluate his priorities and remember the importance of family. This movie is a holiday tradition for my husband and me.

What are your favourite holiday movies? Please let me know. Maybe I haven’t seen them. That would make me so happy.
