Insta-Friday in real life, small pleasures

It's time once again for a look back at the week using simple, sweet cell phone photos. I am sooo ready for March and any warmth it might bring. It is freezing here today and we are looking forward to any days with temps above zero!

In times like these, what gets me through are life's simple pleasures. Like food. Yummy baked food! I pulled out a lovely, cast iron flower muffin pan today. My mom gave it to me a while back, but I had yet to use it. The banana chocolate chip muffins came out shaped like a tulip, a lily, an iris, etc. It was a suitable reminder that spring is on the way...some day.

I also enjoyed listening to a little Sam Cooke with my oatmeal today. Music is one of the best simple pleasures, isn't it? There's a song for every mood. "You Send Me" always picks me up.

I baked English Scones from The Garden of Vegan another day. A good scone is always a welcome treat. Warm and comforting with a nice cup of tea.

The family and I also enjoyed a couple rounds of Pictionary on the chalkboard this week. So fun. By the way, she was in the process of drawing a witch's hat and broom in this photo.

Last weekend, some kind friends invited us over for dinner. A lot of laughter (and a bit of wine) with friends is the best of simple pleasures. The women enjoyed watching the men barbecue in the snow. That's devotion. Then again, I imagine the beer helped warm them some.

Jolene is always a pleasure to watch. She's a bit like a cat, squeezing herself into tight places. This experiment with a Caillou chair my daughter left on the couch didn't work all that well.

My little guy got a much-needed haircut this week. He refused to leave his iPad long enough to find an inspiration photo, so his dad and I eventually chose it for him. He was happy in the end, thank goodness.

While I have been largely going exercise-free lately (and by lately I mean the last year or more), the kids keep up with their activities. Here's my gal going off to dance classes while the boy went skiing with dad.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and enjoy above-zero weather! We are trying to catch up on movies tonight and tomorrow night before the Oscars. But first I have to make a cranberry and vodka martini and finish watching a movie I previously started - Adore, a naughty tale of two mothers (played by Naomi Watts and Robin Wright) in Australia who fall in love with each other's sons. From what I have seen so far, handsome men and gorgeous (and I mean gorgeous) coastal scenery compete for your attention in this film. The crystal blue seas make me want to run away to live in a seaside cottage!

What's your favourite simple pleasure?

Let's meet up on Instagram.

  1. I loooove the idea of a bbq in the snow! But remember I don't live with snow so it's all amazing coolness to me. Your son's haircut looks mighty fine, we're lazy with haircuts here and my son gets the home clippers treatment. Caillou! That used to play when my son was little and I could never get the song out of my head. I love how Jolene doesn't seem to mind that she doesn't fit in the chair.

    1. I guess snow is cool...for a couple of days. ;) I am not confident about cutting anyone's hair so we definitely trust it to the experts. In terms of Caillou, I'm pretty sure we should be letting that chair go now, but the kids have trouble agreeing to get rid of anything. Hope you are enjoying the weekend! :)

  4. OH, I really want to see "Adore"! I read the short story the movie is based on, "The Grandmothers" by Doris Lessing. It is worth seeking out.

    1. I would love to read the story now! I'm sure it's better than the movie. Books usually are. :)
