Vegan Gluten-Free Donuts & The Healthy Shopper (Giveaway)

vegan gluten-free donuts

Maybe talking about donuts is a funny way of starting a post about healthy shopping choices. But the thing is, I like to know what's in my food. When I make my own baked goods, I know that they don't contain any artificial colours or flavours or unhealthy additives. That's where the folks at The Healthy Shopper and I are in complete agreement. The site is a great source for healthy living ideas, recipes, product reviews and more. Plus, they are the people behind The Healthy Shopper coupon book, which happens to hold my very favourite coupons ever. That's because this unique coupon book offers significant discounts on natural and organic products.

Recently I received some happy mail - a box of (healthy!) goodies from The Healthy Shopper - their fall product picks. Among the natural and organic products I received were a couple of Pamela's gluten-free products. I have used and enjoyed Pamela's gluten-free Artisan Flour Blend before, so when I saw this recipe for vegan and gluten-free donuts, I knew that this flour would help me to create the perfect gluten-free donuts. And so it did. The donuts had a great taste and consistency and gave an authentic donut experience with much healthier ingredients.

Buying Better Groceries with the Healthy Shopper

Are you a reader of grocery labels like I am? Do you take forever to pick out your groceries and haul them home? I hear ya. I like to know every ingredient that's in my grocery picks (and check the expiry date too!).

I spend most of my grocery shopping time in the produce section - I know that any fruit or vegetable is a solid choice for good health. My next stop is usually the health food/organic section of the store. This is where I look for healthy refrigerated and dry goods options such as my favourite kamut udon noodles, organic ketchup, organic dry lentils and healthier cereals.

What I Ate Wednesday - with the Beastie Boys

I remember when grocery shopping used to be fun. I still like to browse, read ingredients lists and pick out new products to try, but I have so much stuff to get now that it's a little overwhelming. I have to please four picky people (including myself), think about what to make for dinner, devise ways to get the kids to eat healthy snacks and figure out what to pack for those dreaded school lunches.

Once the kids were off to school today, I stopped by No Frills just to pick up some fruit for lunches and snacks. Close to $200 and a full trunk later, I drove home thinking now I have to get all this stuff out of the car and put away. For motivation I put a Beastie Boys cd in the stereo. I figured they could keep me moving if anybody could. Anyway, that's done, the Beastie Boys are still running in the background, and it's time to move on to What I Ate Wednesday and a look back at some food highlights from the past week.

I chowed down on a whole bunch of these vegan Triple C Bars, above. They are completely addictive. Just ask my mom - she made some herself the other day, and she rarely ever bakes anymore. She just had to have them!

Grocery List, part two

Last week, I shared part one of my list of favourite natural and organic grocery products. Today, in part two of my grocery list, I am including my everyday essentials—items that I can’t (or won’t) live without.
Earth Balance Original Buttery Spread is our everyday margarine and butter replacement. It is plant-based, vegan, gluten-free and contains no artificial ingredients or hydrogenated oils. I know I sound like an advertisement, but this is good stuff!

Have you seen the ingredients in some bouillon powders? Scary stuff—MSG being one of the worst. Harvest Sun Vegetable Bouillon Powder is our staple for making soups. The ingredients are pretty simple: Yeast Extract, Sea Salt, Potato* & Corn Starch*, Anti-Caking Agent Calcium Carbonate, Carrots*, Leeks*, Non-Hydrogenated Palm Oil*, Celery*, Parsley*, Turmeric*, Nutmeg*. (*certified organic)

I have tried a number of different brands of tofu over the years, and my clear favourite is Sol Cuisine Organic Firm Tofu. One, it is nice and firm and fries or bakes up well. Two, it is organic, which means no GMO soy. Three, it is made with calcium, so it has the added bonus of contributing a bit of non-dairy calcium to your diet.

I have talked before about Premier Japan Gluten Free Teriyaki Sauce. Pour a half a bottle of this over a pound of tofu cut into triangles, add some garlic powder and olive oil, and bake for about half an hour. There. You have yourself an easy meat substitute for dinner.

I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to caffeine. It makes me shaky and agitated. And, like you, I hear all about the benefits of green tea. So, my drink of choice is decaf green tea. I like to try different brands, but most often I drink Stash Decaf Premium Green Tea.

Almost every Tuesday is "Taco Tuesday" at our house. Now that I am avoiding regular wheat, I can’t have the Yves meatless ground round. Luckily, I found Sol Organic Veggie Crumbles. Saute them in olive oil and add some spices like chili powder and garlic powder and they make a great taco filler, along with refried beans, tomatoes, guacamole...and my next item.

A handy addition to our Taco Tuesdays is Tofutti Sour Supreme, a non-dairy sour cream imitator. I’m not saying this is healthy, whole food, but it adds a nice little flavour and texture to your taco. We all need a little treat!

VitaSpelt Spelt Elbows also make for a quick, healthy and delicious dinner, using the on-the-package recipe for pasta with tomato sauce and chickpeas. And, this pasta is from Abruzzo, where my husband’s extended family lives.
Next time, I’m going to share some items that are more snacks than they are essentials.
Although, snacking is essential to me. How about you?

Grocery List, part one

I have been a vegetarian for almost 18 years, and I can tell you through experience, you can do it the cheap way or you can do it the expensive way. And, either way can be healthy.
I started out doing it the cheap way, as a university student in my very first apartment. I was earning an MA in journalism while my husband worked at the campus library. We ate lots of pasta with tomato sauce and chickpeas, burgers made from textured vegetable protein and Asian noodle dishes with stir-fried veggies and tofu. We spent about $35 a week on groceries.
Over the years, I gradually started to lean more towards the expensive way. I love food…and if it’s healthy that’s even better. As you know, sometimes these healthy products come at a higher cost, but if you pick them right, they are worth the added expense.
I have tried many natural and organic products over the years, and I have settled on quite a few favourites. I want to share some of them with you so maybe you can discover a few new items without wasting your money on less palatable ones first. These products are tried and true.
Experts tell us that steel cut oats are a less refined, healthier form of oats. Problem is, I just don’t feel like taking the time to cook them in the morning. That’s why I love these Country Choice Organic Quick Cook Steel Cut Oats. Once the water boils, they are ready in less than five minutes, and they are great with some fresh fruit, a little drip of maple syrup and some non-dairy milk.

Barbara’s Peanut Butter Puffins cereal is obviously meant to be eaten at breakfast, and that is how my daughter eats it. I, on the other hand, eat it throughout the day for snacks (sans milk). These little nuggets are tasty! They are made from natural ingredients and low in sugar and fat.

Food Should Taste Good Multigrain Tortilla Chips are gluten-free, high in fibre, certified vegan and, as the package says, they are a cracker as well as a chip. Use them with salsa, hummus, whatever you like…they are delicious. Even my mom loves them, and she isn’t a granola cruncher like me.

If you are trying to reduce your intake of regular wheat products like I am, I highly recommend these Sobaya Kamut Udon noodles. They cook up just like pasta—no rinsing needed! They are great for Italian or Asian dishes.

In terms of spelt pasta, one of my favourites is Pantanella Spelt Pasta, which I buy at a local bakery. This pasta doesn’t create a nasty film in the water like some spelt pastas do. Not sure how easy it is to find in general.

MI-DEL Gluten-Free Ginger Snaps are a great little treat with tea. And they are gluten-free. What more can I say?

Taste of Nature’s Organic Food Bars are delicious, high in fibre and contain no additives, artificial flavours or sodium. Just yummy vegan, kosher, non-GMO ingredients like nuts, fruit, seeds and agave nectar. My current favourite flavour is Quebec Cranberry Carnival.

While it isn’t a food, Emergen-C is a staple in our kitchen. It is a powdered mix that fizzes up in water. Each packet contains 1,000 mg of vitamin C as well as antioxidants, electrolytes and B vitamins. It works wonders if you feel a cold coming on and is also, I’m ashamed to say, a great hangover remedy.

I gave a packet to my sister to test out. She was astounded to find that her hangover was gone soon after drinking this mix. Next time, I told her, she can even drink one the night before, prior to consuming alcohol and then more the next day. Of course, even drinking water will help alleviate some symptoms. I give this to my kids when they aren’t feeling well too, just in smaller doses. A note to my fellow Canadians: if you are visiting the U.S. anytime soon, buy your Emergen-C there. It costs about half the price.

Except for one time when my daughter was really ill, I have never given regular cough syrup to my children. (By the way, the one time I did, she got worse and we had to go to the hospital.) For a mild cough, we have found that Boiron’s Stodal homeopathic cough syrup helps to reduce symptoms and help them sleep.

I can’t forget the humble apple as both a nutritious natural food and a remedy for what ails us.

I got an organic fruit and veggie delivery this week, and it was a fun treat, like unwrapping a Christmas present.

Aren’t the fruits and veggies naturally beautiful? What are your favourite natural products?

Thrifting Adventures

When I was a teenager, my best friend and I would hit the thrift store in search of wool cardigans, mustard coloured v-neck sweaters and old men’s brown leather jackets.

I was tall and blonde, while she was shorter and brunette, so I always thought that, with our shabby clothes, we looked like this:

As I got older, I lost the patience needed to sift through racks of cast-off clothing. I would sometimes visit a thrift shop to look at old furniture, or dishes, or something easier to browse through.

Recently, however, inspired by blogs like Sherri’s and James’s, I decided to give thrift store shopping a try once more.

I asked the family to join me for a trip to the local Salvation Army shop. My husband was happy to tag along, while my son put up a major three-hour protest about how boring it would be.
Turns out we all got some treats, even the dog, although I’m sure she would have preferred some more of her mailman-shaped cookies.
Jolene’s new sweater made her irresistibly cuddly. That dog barks like a maniac at other dogs, but put a sweater on her and she has no complaints. The kids were fighting over who got to hug her.
She also got this new hat. She was less than thrilled about that choice.
My daughter got some SpongeBob pyjamas.

She also spotted some new sunglasses and a funky scarf.
The kids got some toys, brand new in their boxes, for under $1 each. Num Nums enjoyed his new ride.
With the spring weather comes my son’s new obsession with skateboarding. We found him some shirts and hoodies with skate themes.
He also spotted this necklace for 99 cents.
I got my sister and I these brand new boxes that are meant to hold greeting cards.
We definitely don’t need another stuffed animal in this house. But, my daughter couldn’t resist this little guy. The kids were shocked when I kept saying yes to things. I guess I got carried away, since I am used to mall prices. It’s like I thought everything was free.

My husband and I picked up a few books and records at the start, and decided to put them back at the end. Unfortunately, we just don’t have the room. We have hundreds of books and tons of records, so much so that sometimes I buy repeats. I did pick up a couple of picture frames, though.
And a towel rack.

I know some people have reservations about using second-hand items, but that’s why I love my front load washer and dryer duo. I even threw in this bed rest.

Women seem to have a natural inclination to shop, and thrift stores provide your shopping fix without the high price tag. All this stuff was about $50!
Have you been to a thrift store recently? Got any great finds?

Insta-Friday in real life

It’s Friday, and that means it's time for another week in review using cell phone photos.
This is a great excuse for me to gather a mishmash of photos under the umbrella of “Insta-Friday.” Hopefully, you can relate somehow. My mom likes my Friday pictures, anyway. That's something.
This week, I’m showing you not just the kids, but my dog as well. Dog owners are proud of their dogs—what can I say?

Here is the aforementioned dog, Jolene, looking rather obedient. She was probably hoping for a treat. That dog spends her entire life sleeping and foraging for food. If you think it’s annoying that your retriever “loves” food, get a dog like mine, with a bit of beagle in her. The lab will be looking good. Trust me.

My daughter loves to help in the kitchen. Here she is with a fruit salad she put together all by herself.

This is my shopping cart. I went to the store to get a couple of things. How many women actually ever walk away with a couple of things? And, is it just me, or do the rest of you enjoy looking into other people’s shopping carts? I like to determine who they are shopping for, whether they live alone, if they are addicted to junk food—the list goes on. Also, I always wonder, do they train the store clerks not to ask about your food choices? Because they almost never comment.

My son was all happy the other day because his quesadilla looked like Pac-Man. There’s even an “eye.”

On Sunday, we had this dinner that I talked about earlier in the week. The kids actually ate pretty well. The secret is to starve them for a few hours.

Right after that, the kids wanted something else. They ate some apples. Kids are funny, because they don’t care what order they eat the food in. The Sweet Marie bars would definitely be last for me.

We also made waffles last weekend, from a recipe in Vegan Brunch. We haven’t made them for years, and now I remember why. It took me longer to clean up the overflow of batter than it did to make the waffles.

I also made this yummy marbled banana bread from Post Punk Kitchen. I didn`t quite get the swirl right, but it was tasty.

How was your week?
