What I Ate Wednesday - with thoughts on my birthday
I am expecting a great day on this particular Wednesday, it being my birthday and all. You know you're getting old when people ask you what you want for your birthday and you can't think of a single thing. Well, I did think of one single thing. The same thing I always ask for - a vegan chocolate bar, preferably a Go Max Go Jokerz bar. In frustration, my husband said, "I'll buy you a whole box of them then!" If only he weren't joking.
I also asked for a candle, another gift I want on every occasion - because, frankly, with two dogs and two children, my house stinks...really bad. Fyi, if you own a candle company, feel free to send me vast quantities of lead-free, soy candles scented with natural essential oils.

This Mother's Child
My baby boy turns 13 today. Imagine my surprise. When he was just six months old, I used to hold him in a standing position and say, "Look, you're standing up!" with all kinds of enthusiasm. I'll never forget the smile on his sweet face - he looked so proud. It feels like it was yesterday.

Mom's 80th Birthday Party #NikonMOMents
My mom doesn't like being the centre of attention. And she certainly doesn't like having her picture taken. So, a couple of months ago. when I asked her, "What do you suppose the subject of my next Nikon MOMents post is going to be?" she answered with a bit of trepidation, "My birthday party?" You guessed correct, Mama!
Luckily, Mom will do anything to support her "baby." (I'm the youngest of three.) Mom turned 80 in September and we celebrated with a small family gathering at my brother's house. Mom urged me not to invite too many people (there's that centre of attention issue again).

A Monster High Birthday Party (and a giveaway - CLOSED)
Unbelievably, my little girl is almost 10. My youngest child, a full decade old! I have trouble accepting that she is no longer my chubby-cheeked, sweet Gerber baby. But she is something just as great - a unique, friendly, happy, social being who brings sunshine wherever she goes.
We celebrated her birthday a bit early to coincide with a special arrival in the mail - a pre-release copy of the Monster High Freaky Fusion DVD. Watching this movie proved to be the perfect activity for my little gal's birthday, because it's all about teamwork, the power of friendship, individuality and acceptance of others. In other words, we are all perfectly imperfect and freaky fabulous.

Vegan Mint Chocolate Brownie Cupcakes
Whether for Easter, a birthday party or just to brighten someone's day, a cupcake says it's time to celebrate. I decided to make these Vegan Mint Chocolate Brownie Cupcakes for the kids (and, let's face it, me) this past weekend. After all, the weekend is something to celebrate, right?
I went with a chocolate cupcake base...because you really can't go wrong with chocolate. I threw in some peppermint flavour for a little twist. Of course, cupcakes must be topped with thick, creamy icing. I added a hint of peppermint flavour to the icing as well.

A Halloween Birthday Party
My daughter's birthday is today, just slightly more than a week before Halloween. The timing opens up some fun possibilities for party themes. And indeed she chose to go with a Halloween theme this year, asking her friends to come to her party in costume.
We held the party on a Friday evening and I pretty much spent the entire day shopping and decorating. The kids and their dad helped out after school too. Here's the birthday girl adding washi tape flags to party straws, above.

A gift for my little girl...and a photo book giveaway!
It’s now the middle of November, and I am still in denial about Christmas. The kids are busily cutting out toy ads from store flyers and making lists, complete with prices and store availability. They know me well. A thorough source of information will better ensure I actually remember what they want. Don’t be like me. Start planning your presents now, so you can better enjoy the days leading up to the holidays. Make some cookies before Christmas instead of rushing to a crowded mall.

Birthday Wishes
My little girl turns eight this week. Instead of heading to the movie theatre or the bowling alley for her party like we usually do, we decided to party old school this weekend, inviting some of her girlfriends over to our house to celebrate.
When it comes to little girls, the party theme usually starts with the cake. Once she settled on a pumpkin cake, it was all simple from there. There's certainly no shortage of pumpkin-themed items in stores right now!

Unforgettable Fire
In my earlier post today, about Papa's birthday party, I mentioned that we generally end parties with a bit of live music. Here is a short (poor quality) video of brother-in-law #1 singing and playing guitar, with my husband also playing guitar.

Papa's Party, part one
We had more than one reason to celebrate as we gathered together for my father-in-law's 75th birthday party this past weekend. In addition to reaching a significant milestone in years, "Papa," as the kids call him, has just finished chemotherapy treatments for colon cancer, and he is recovering nicely.
The party took place at the lovely rural home of my sister-in-law. I have shown photos of her rustic retreat before, here and here. My SIL is the perfect party host, taking great care to ensure that special touches abound. Above, her son helps set the outdoor tables for dinner.
The girls enjoyed eating at this special table, with logs for chairs.
The kids (including my niece/our hostess's daughter, above) appreciated the colourful curly straws.
Here are Papa's four granddaughters (including my daughter, second from left).
We dined to the tinkle of wind chimes and paired our food with some homemade wine (mixed with ginger ale in my case).
Our hostess, in a rare moment of rest.
I discussed some of the party food on Wednesday. The woman behind the amazing tofu lasagna is my mother-in-law, above right.
Here she is with her eldest grandson.
Papa with his son (my husband).
And, with his daughters. I think you can tell from the photos that Papa is a kind, gentle soul.
Here he is enjoying his birthday song.
Papa with all of his eight grandchildren, four boys and four girls.
More photos to come, including a new animal in my sister-in-law's menagerie!
Linking up to Photo Friday at The Hollie Rogue.

Thrifting at mom's house
I didn’t have time to visit a thrift store this weekend, however I still ended up with lovely treasures. On Saturday, we were at my parents’ house celebrating my dad’s 85th birthday. Here is grampy with my kids (on the left) and their cousin. On Sunday, we visited my lovely sister-in-law and her family—husband, four children, large dog, two cats, rabbit, turtle, rooster and chickens. I’ll have some photos of that visit to share later this week.
So, because I am enjoying my thrift store finds so much, I went “shopping” at the best possible place—my parents’ house. My mom is happy when I “adopt” items from her extensive collection of vintage dishes. And this means shopping is free for me. Isn’t that the best kind of shopping? Also, she has better stuff than many thrift stores, because her finds was hand-picked over the years at flea markets, auctions and garage sales. So, without further ado, here are some of the items I scored.
My mom was kind enough to give me this Blue Mountain Pottery Lazy Susan. It was in our house for as long as I can remember and my mom would serve special meals like Thanksgiving dinner in it, with mashed potatoes, carrots, etc. in the sections. I need to put it to use myself!
I also got a Blue Mountain Pottery tiered stand. I can’t wait to use this.
My mom had previously given me this Blue Mountain Pottery bunny in the same gold and brown tones.
How much do you love this James Kent Old Foley Staffordshire plate? It is an image of Frans Hals’s “The Laughing Cavalier.”
I also scored two of these little tin serving trays. Love the retro pattern in brown and blue.
I had admired this little pedestal dish that my mom used for her keys. Now it’s mine! These candies won't last long.
I took six of these little wine glasses. She has six more for me to take later. Not that I need another wine glass.
I went home with this lovely green serving dish.
And the same vintage glass serving dish in a golden yellow colour.
How about you? Any great finds to report?

It's beginning to look like Christmas & making a Cola Cake
We haven’t had much snow yet this year, so it took me awhile to realize that Christmas is coming soon. No, I haven’t done all my gift shopping or baked my holiday cookies, but at least we have the outdoor lights up and the Christmas tree decorated. Baby steps…
My favourite ornaments are the pewter picture frames my mom gave the kids.

Jolene gradually seems to grow tired of my picture-taking. |
We also celebrated my husband’s birthday this week, with a quiet family dinner. I decided to make a cake I’ve never made before - a cola cake. I settled on this recipe for chocolate cola cake that I spotted on Pinterest. It is more decadent than my usual recipe, but nobody seemed to mind. It turned out to be quite delicious, nice and firm with lots of chocolate icing. Adding cola to your cake might not seem like the healthiest of ideas, but then, it's cake!

The Big 4-0
![]() |
That's me, wondering where the years went. |
What is it about growing older that bothers some people—namely me? Is it the deteriorating physical appearance or the latest ominous drumbeat on the march toward you-know-what? Whatever it is, I had to face it recently, as I “celebrated” my 40th birthday. I am fully aware that I am trying to be grateful for the gift of each and every new day, but sometimes that is a struggle. So, as a remedy to the pain of aging, my husband and I gathered loved ones for a party fueled by friendship, food and our favourite drink of the eighties—Black Label beer. We put on a playlist of songs from the past four decades and consumed some of our favourite snacks (hello Ringolos) and candy from the eighties to bring out our inner teenagers. Looking around at the faces of my friends and relatives, I found comfort in the fact that we are all growing old together. I don’t mean this in an “I want you to suffer along with me” kind of way, but rather in the sense that we see each other for the multi-faceted and unique individuals that we are. And, if we can continue to see the beauty in each other, surely we are better able to see it in ourselves.
