What I Ate Wednesday

This week is the "Oh crap, it's the end of summer vacation and we haven't accomplished any of our home projects" week. That means painting, organizing and purging, with a wee bit of cooking tossed in. It also means I haven't taken as many food photos. So I'm going to share a single day's worth of food pics from yesterday.

I started the day with Bob's Red Mill 7 Grain Hot Cereal. It reminds me of the Red River Hot Cereal I enjoyed as a child. I served it topped with brown sugar just as I did as a child. But I use soy beverage now instead of dairy. The 7 grain cereal keeps me full for a while. It's a combo of wheat, rye, triticale, oats, oat bran, barley, brown rice and flaxseed, so it's full of fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals.

What I Ate Wednesday, on the run edition

The past week has been a bit of a whirlwind, with a lot of short trips here and there. So, meals have been quick and baking has been minimal.

Here is my What I Ate Wednesday look at a few highlights. We had one of our summer staples again, tacos with refried beans. This time, we topped them with sautéed orange and yellow peppers, onions and mushrooms.

What I Ate Wednesday, Boston edition

With the Internet problems we had in Cape Cod last week, I didn't manage to get my "What I Ate Wednesday, Cape Cod edition" up until Thursday. So, I missed linking up with Jenn at Peas & Crayons. If you want to see our Cape Cod eats, you can find them here.

We took a day trip to Boston last Friday, before we headed back to Canada on Saturday.

We picked up these delicious rosemary fries at one of Boston's handy Clover Food Lab trucks. We washed the fries down with some iced tea, perfect for a very hot Boston day. We were a bit surprised to find that it is basically cold tea, because we are more accustomed to the sweetened variety.

My son selected (and enjoyed) this barbecued seitan sandwich.

I had this "BLT" in which the B stands for tempeh.

We did a quick visit to the chaotic Faneuil Hall, which has a busy food court with many, many selections. I went for the veg sushi.

The family went for pizza. Boy it would have been nice to have a table to sit at. We ended up moving to an outdoor bench.

Among the items I found at Trader Joe's (which we don't have at home) was these frozen banana slices covered in chocolate. They were nice to sample, but not my favourite treat.

Before we left Cape Cod on Saturday, we stopped at Trader Joe's in the morning for some snacks. I got this noodle dish for my husband.

And this super spinach salad for me. This way we could avoid picking up lunch at the dismal rest stops.

A delicious Trader Joe's treat...these chocolate covered nutty bits. Yum.

Back at home, we are doing laundry, cleaning up and eating easy meals, like this salad, nachos and (Daiya vegan) cheese and hummus lunch.

Dinner: some simple pasta in an olive oil sauce along with breaded and fried tofu and salad.

What I Ate Wednesday, Cape Cod edition

Yes, I am doing What I Ate Wednesday on Thursday. We have no Internet access at the moment (or should I say for the past three days) at the cottage we rented in Cape Cod. I am now hanging with a bunch of people outside the (closed) West Yarmouth library, poaching their Internet.

Gotta make this quick. Highlights from this week of food. Eating and travelling can be difficult. The Holiday Inn Express in Albany provided free jelly beans. The kids (okay and I too) enjoyed those and the free breakfast of biscuits, pancakes, etc. I am maintaining my dairy-free status, but finding it impossible to go light on the wheat on this vacation. While I didn't indulge in the breakfast items, I have gone for wheat items since then.

We bought several grocery items at Trader Joe's in Hyannis. I enjoyed touring a new grocery store. We made up this fruit plate back at the cottage.

We also made this stir fry with pre-cut veggies, tofu and rice noodles in a soy/teriyaki sauce.

I enjoyed this vegan burrito at El Mundo restaurant in Provincetown.

Breakfast. I brought these oats from the health food store at home. Delicious dried cranberries from Trader Joe's.

In this land of seafood, I was thrilled to find Box Office Cafe and its selection of vegan pizzas with Daiya cheese. I went for this one with the curly fries and veggie burgers on top!
