Celebrate Canada Day with Easy Plant-Based Recipes, a Festive Meal Plan & Family-Friendly Decor 🇨🇦

Black lantern, with white candle, conch and red gerbera daisy inside

In a world that feels uncertain and challenging, it’s comforting and uplifting to take a moment to celebrate the values Canada stands for, including community, kindness, resilience and hope. Canada Day is not just a day off (although I'm sure we all need one!), it’s a chance to come together, reflect on our shared strengths and express pride in this beautiful land we share.

Canada Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the simple joys of summer—good food, great company, and a touch of Canadian pride. Whether you're planning a picnic, a backyard BBQ or a cozy afternoon at home with a great Canadian novel (The Handmaid's Tale feels appropriate at the moment), you can make it feel festive with a few thoughtful recipes and easy decor ideas.

Here at Woman in Real Life, we’re sharing plant-based recipes, kid-friendly snacks and creative DIY decor to help make your July 1st both fun and fuss-free. 🇨🇦

Patriotic Canada Day Ribbon Flag & Canada Day Creations From Canadian Bloggers

Canada Day is coming up on July 1st. The day marks the anniversary of the 1867 enactment of the Constitution Act, which united three separate colonies into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada. But I think what people mainly celebrate on July 1st is the fact that it's warm outside (hot even) and we finally get to enjoy our lakes, beaches, parks and swimming pools. And maybe a cold beverage or two.

Canadians don't tend to display the national flag on our porches as often as our American neighbours, but our red and white flag does make a strong appearance on Canada Day. The inspiration for my patriotic Canada Day ribbon flag was in fact a DIY American ribbon flag I saw on Pinterest. I googled "patriotic Canada ribbon flag" and came up with nothing but a bunch of plastic flags for sale, no DIYs. So I thought I would create a DIY ribbon flag tailored to the celebration of our beautiful country for Canada Day. Anytime we're celebrating a special event, it's nice to get together with friends. Today is no different. I have six Canadian blogging friends joining me to share their creative ideas for Canada Day food and decor. See them via the links at the end of this post.

Canada Day Party Ideas & A Family-Friendly Strawberry No-jito Recipe #YearofFeasting

*This post is sponsored by Giant Tiger. All opinions are authentic and my own. Thank you for supporting the awesome companies that partner with Woman in Real Life!*

Summer is just about here and I am once again joining Dannyelle from Life is a Party and other Canadian bloggers to celebrate the season with a party. Last season, my party was a Celebrate Spring Party with a veggie burger toppings bar and vegan root beer floats. The idea is called "A Year of Feasting," and it involves holding one themed party per season in order to spend more time with family and/or friends. As Canada Day falls on July 1st, and it's the country's big 150th birthday party this year, we decided to theme our parties this month around Canada Day. Hopefully you will take away some ideas you can use to celebrate Canada Day in style. If you are American, just convert the maple leaves to stars and you're good to go! Be sure to check out the other bloggers' party ideas via the links at the bottom of this post. Such fabulous ideas!

A Canada Day Mantel With Two Cricut Projects

Canada Day maple leaf garland and framed art cut with Cricut Explore Air

July 1st, 2017 is not only Canada Day, a federal holiday on which we celebrate the anniversary of the 1867 enactment of the Constitution - this year it's also an extra-special celebration, because Canada is now 150 years young. People throughout the country will be celebrating the holiday with parties, outings and beach days. No doubt many will be decorating their homes in red and white, the colours of the Canadian flag. As the central portion of the flag features a red maple leaf, the maple leaf is also prominent in Canada Day decor.

To celebrate, I decorated our diy fireplace mantel for Canada Day with two projects - a Canadian flag garland and a framed maple leaf print. These are both simple yet festive projects to make with your Cricut Explore Air™ or other Cricut cutting machine.
