Kid Thrift

Last week, I told you about thrifting with my sister. For our first stop, at the Bibles for Missions store, my sister and I were joined by my niece, my husband and our two kids. The thing is, I warned the husband that we would be in the store for a good long while. My sister takes even longer than me to browse. But he wanted to come along. Of course, he ended up sitting in the car complaining.

We dropped him and the kids off at my sister's house before we went to the next two stores. My daughter did manage to find a few things at the Bibles for Missions shop though. She and I picked out these fabrics, above, thinking that we can either make doll clothes or do some kind of craft project with them one day (hopefully before she enters university in nine years).

Thrifting Sisters...part three

I'm back with another edition of Thrifting Sisters. My last post was in November. If I lived closer to my sister, you can be sure there would be many more of these posts. Having someone to shop with fuels the addiction, doesn't it? Our first stop was Bibles for Missions in St. Catharines, where I picked up this piece of pottery made in Vineland, Ontario.

Thrifting on 10 Bucks

On my way back from a fun trip to Niagara Falls last week, I stopped in at the Bibles for Missions Thrift Shop in St. Catharines, Ontario. I first wrote about this little gem of a shop in June, when my sister introduced me to it. You can read about it in my Thrifting Sisters post.

I have been trying not to visit thrift stores lately, in order to save money and stop building clutter in my home. But, I was missing the thrill of the hunt. So, I set myself a goal of spending no more than 10 bucks (plus tax).

I knew that if I could achieve my goal anywhere, it would be at Bibles for Missions. I wouldn't come away with much from Value Village or similar places for $10.

Thrift Squeeze

Somehow I manage to sneak in thrift store visits at the most unexpected times. I even went to a couple stores while we were in Cape Cod. I didn't find anything though.

On Saturday, we drove straight from Cape Cod to my sister's house in St. Catharines, Ontario. By the time we stopped at Wegmans for some grocery items and the Duty Free for some (very cheap) booze, we arrived at my sister's at about 11:00 p.m.

On Sunday afternoon, my sister (and partner in crime) suggested we go to a nearby Goodwill store. The Bibles for Missions thrift store that I had so enjoyed with her on our last visit is closed on Sundays.

The Goodwill has much higher prices than that store, but I found a few bargains nevertheless.

The first treasure we spotted was this Alfred Sung teapot, above, for $2. I decided to give it to my sister because she liked it too, but I snapped a quick photo of it at her house.

I bought this decanter for $2. What I like about it is the shot glass built into the lid. I also got the scarf it is sitting on (for $1.99).

I purchased this rather strange wooden jar. My sister suggested putting cotton balls in it, but we were surprised to find that it has a very shallow interior.

I got this cute watering can, which is actually plastic inside, as well as two of these colourful doilies. I have no idea where I am going to use the doilies, but I couldn't resist their upbeat cheer.

I guess I couldn't quite leave the beach behind, because I snapped up these shower curtain rings.

I then found this bathroom mat at a discount store next to Goodwill.

In keeping with the beachy/shell theme, I used a previous thrift store find to display some shells we picked up on a beach in Cape Cod.

How is your summer going? Are you making time to shop?

Thrifting Sisters

As I mentioned yesterday, we stopped in to visit my sister on Saturday on our way home from Niagara Falls.

My sister and I indulged in some cranberry-infused vodka mixed with Sprite while the kids enjoyed the swimming pool. And, no, we did not get too drunk to watch the kids.

We did leave my brother-in-law to watch them while my husband (who was not drinking) drove us to a couple of thrift stores. To tell you the truth, I hadn’t even thought of going. My sister is possibly even more addicted to the hunt than I am. But once she mentioned it—different thrift stores in a different town?—I just had to go.
