Thrifty Finds

Despite visiting a couple of thrift stores and an antique market in the last week or so, I haven't purchased any thrifty finds lately. I'm trying to be super picky about what I add to the chaos of this home. It is spring and all that. I should be purging rather than buying. Or purging and THEN buying!

I did add to my Pyrex collection though, via a gift from my mother. That brings my Pyrex pieces up to three. Ha. There's nobody like a mom. I told my mom that Pyrex has become hard to get, so she stopped by the thrift store in her town to check for it. This Homestead pattern covered casserole had a sticker on it that appeared to say $8. Mom wasn't about to pay that. But it was half price day. And, it turns out the sticker was meant to say $3, so she got this dish, complete with lid, for $1.50. Nice work Mom! Now here's a little peek at the stuff I didn't buy these last couple of weeks.

The kids and I went to the Prudhommes Antique Market two weekends ago. I love the lakeside location and all the little cabins.

My daughter admired this lovely blue bicycle, complete with basket. But it was rusty and priced at over $100. I think we are going to go with a brand new bike, given that she and her brother and her dad like to hit the trails often in summer.

I snapped a picture of this vintage cast iron kettle, evocative of another era.

My husband and I stopped at a thrift store in Barrie, Ontario last week. A few days earlier, I had been talking about wanting a vintage typewriter, mostly as a photo prop. But I really don't know anything about them, so when I spotted this Underwood model for $45 I had no idea if it was a good deal.

The store was also selling these vintage canning jars, for $5 each. Seems pricey to me. Luckily my mom gave me a whole bunch of these. I do love the way they look in the pantry cupboard - so much nicer than the new jars.

Did you pass up any potential thrifty finds recently?

  3. I love Pyrex, and actually use it all the time for leftovers, etc. But I never see it in the thrift stores anymore. At least not for any reasonable price!

    1. So your area seems to be the same as ours in terms of Pyrex. Maybe it's urban areas that are picked over?

  4. I find photographing finds a nice substitute for buying-- our house is so tiny I have to be careful about, as you said, what gets added to the chaos! Nice treasure hunting finds!!

  5. Thanks for sharing your thrifty adventures. I'm trying to limit my purchases as our apartment is getting kind of full so it's fun to read about what you saw.

  6. They say that if you have three pieces of something, you have a collection - looks like you're on your way! Hah!!!

I must tell you - in the past couple of weeks, I've seen the coffee pot that goes with the flower power mugs!!!! Have you ever seen it??

I used to see the old jars at the thrifts all the time, that's where I bought what I have, now, there's nothing!!!!

    1. I'm sure I won't be able to resist new pieces now Jill. ;)

No I haven't seen the coffee pot, but I don't go to many sales - only thrift shops.

Yes, the old jars are harder to come by too. :( I think my mom got the whole box of 'em at an auction or something.

  7. Nice Pyrex Dish your mom found! I just found a refrigerator dish that goes with your other blue one there, the Butterprint pattern. But I don't collect that particular pattern so gave it to a friend, who was absolutely delighted to have her first piece of a vintage Pyrex collection. I actually have good luck with Pyrex at the thrift store I go to ... so much so that the dedicated cupboard for it is jam packed and I have to begin being really careful about what I add to it!

  9. Moms are the best at finding deals ;) I don't know much about typewriters either, but $45 doesn't sound tooooo bad? I agree with you on the bike & the jars though. I have a ton of canning jars from my mom too, and I like the way the bottoms have the dates on them. Wendy x

    1. I looked a bit online and it seems a fair price. I was a bit hesitant about how much room it would take up too though. Yes, the old jars are great! Jo
