What I Ate Wednesday, with a new superfood

Before I get to this week's What I Ate Wednesday, I have two winners to announce. Congratulations to K.S. Barrett, the winner of Lucy's delicious vegan and gluten-free cookies. Congratulations to Brenda W. too! She won the Crofter's organic jam. I have sent you both emails. Enjoy these wonderful products!

This week I have been consuming smoothies almost every morning. I have been experimenting with smoothies that don't contain non-dairy milks for a change. This one, above, is pure fruit and water (I think so anyway. Sometimes I forget what I threw in there.)

I made a couple of green smoothies too, using spinach and all kinds of fruits. After I finish cutting up fruit for the kids' school snacks, I throw the remaining chunks in my smoothie.

I have been continuing on my quest to eat more fruit. Here is one of my favourite ways to eat fruit -- in a big "fruit salad."

Annette at Vida Grains in Salt Spring Island, BC sent me samples of her innovative new superfood supplement. She mixes whole grains and fresh seeds for a “fibre food topping” that can be added to savoury or sweeter foods, from salads and stews to rice, quinoa and muesli. All of the mixes are gluten-free and contain 75% or more organic ingredients. I put a tablespoon of "Morning Glory" on my fruit. One tablespoon contains 4g of fat, 3g of fibre and 3g of protein. It contains good stuff like seeds, raisins and goji berries too.

I put the "Savory Fiesta" variety on my pasta (shown here) and on my chili. It has a gentle smell and taste of nutritional yeast...probably because it contains nutritional yeast. It also contains gluten-free oat bran, flax seeds, hemp seeds, granular garlic, dried seaweed and more. I found it added a subtle but enjoyable taste to my dinners.

These superfood toppings also provide you with essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Annette recommends putting "Savory Fiesta" on popcorn. Or you can mix the "Morning Glory" with nut butter. Sounds like a plan!

Annette pitched her product on an episode of CBC Television's "Dragons' Den." Watch the video to see if the "dragons" gave Annette the investment money she asked for. She was hoping for $125,000 for a 30 percent stake in her company. And boy were those dragons rough on her -- especially that mean Kevin O'Leary. Please vote 'IN' for the Vida Grains pitch on the Dragons' Den site.

Visit the Vida Grains website for store information or to buy from the online store.

I have been super busy this week and, as a result, didn't do any baking. Thankfully, my husband decided to make vegan chocolate chip cookies one night. I love it when he does that!

We have had snow the past two nights, so soup is definitely still an option around here. I had one of my favourites for lunch yesterday (leftover from the night before) -- my "Spring Fever Soup," made with chickpeas and quinoa. I think chickpeas are one of the best foods ever!

What's your favourite superfood?

*I received free product samples. All opinions are my own.

  8. I work with a woman who makes the most delicious vegan desserts. The chocolate cake she made was so good that I got the recipe and made it for Ruby's first birthday cake. Unfortunately hubby's relatives wouldn't eat it because it was vegan (seriously) but that left more for me!
