Don't Sweat It! Fixes For 4 Summer Hair Woes

Sun, sand and surf - summer is synonymous with outdoor fun. But summer fun also means perspiration, chlorine and harsh UV rays, and it isn’t always kind to your hair. Don’t sweat it! Colour specialist Sterling Williams, an artistic educator for Matrix Canada, offers up these fixes for four common summer hair woes.

1. Damaged, Dry Hair

Time spent in the blazing sun can lead to dry, brittle hair, split ends and frizziness. To minimize damage, allow your hair to air-dry rather than using hair dryers and other hot styling tools. “Embrace your natural texture,” Williams advises. The less-is-more approach applies to washing hair too. “I don’t feel like anybody needs to wash their hair every day,” she says. “It’s not necessary and it’s not good for your hair.” Wash your hair two to three times per week. Apply a leave-in conditioner or primer to towel-dried hair. “Look for a product that adds both moisture and UV protection,” Williams says. Use a hydrating hair treatment once a week to replenish lost moisture. Use silk scrunchies and a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and minimize breakage of hair strands.

Simple Summer Rice Salad (vegan, gluten-free)

Summer is officially here and it's time to bring on the salads! Pasta salad, green salad, noodle salad and, of course, rice salad. I envision a summer of stocking the fridge with neatly stacked clear containers full of all kinds of easy-to-make, healthy salads to grab on the go. Off to the beach? Have a sesame noodle salad at the ready. Pop it into a cooler with a refreshing spritzer, a variety of fruit and a batch of homemade Coconut Date Brownie Bites and you'll be ready for a picnic at the beach or park. Because, if you're anything like me, preparing for a day trip is all about the food!

End of Summer Checklist & My Birthday Excursion to Port Dover

How do you feel about summer winding down? I confess it saddens me. Summer never feels quite long enough. I'm fine with returning to the routine of school and work. I just think it would be great if it were warm enough to hit the beach after school or have a gathering on the deck with some fruity summer cocktails, just for maybe two more months. As the end of summer approaches, I always think about whether we did everything we planned to do.

Anything Goes Fruit Crisp

With fall beckoning, my desire to bake has returned with a vengeance.

In my opinion, a sweet, tasty fruit crisp is the perfect end-of-summer dessert. The fruit filling still says "summer," but the warm, baked oat topping is a definite tribute to fall.

Insta-Friday in real life, organization edition

It's Insta-Friday again...time to share a look at our family cell phone photos from the past week (or two in this case).

Everywhere you look, summer seems to be winding down. Children have gone back to school in some areas. People are talking about wanting to wear sweaters again. (Not me.)

What I Ate Wednesday

What I Ate Wednesday is here again! Can you believe it is the middle of August?

I am once again sharing some highlights from my last week of eating.

Last night, we decided to try making maki sushi for the second time. We found it easier to roll this time. We had the same fillings as last time, along with sautéed mushrooms. The mushrooms made for a yummy filling!

My husband also made miso soup this time, with chunks of soft tofu in it. It was delicious, and even the kids enjoyed it. They are fairly picky eaters (mostly the girl) but my son loves vegetarian sushi and my daughter is enjoying it more and more each time we have it.

Summer Style

Happy Friday folks!

Since I am not prepared to do an Insta-Friday post today (mainly because I didn’t take any cell phone pics this week), I thought I would post some photos of my youngest modelling her summer style.

I bought her this denim short jumper at Winners (a discount department store). She decided to pair it with a thrifted pink tie sweater.

Cute combination, I think!

Have a great weekend! Any special plans?

Scenes from a summer's day

My new Nikon D5100 DSLR camera was delivered just this morning, and I already love it so much more than my Olympus.

This camera works indoors and out, unlike the Olympus, which seems to only function outdoors.

Of course, I followed everybody around with the camera, including my daughter and a visiting friend, as well as our doggie, Jolene, who was caught trying to steal lunch leftovers (again).

School's Out

Today is the last day of school for my kids before they are free for the summer.

In less than two short hours, they will be home buzzing about all the things they are going to do now that those pesky classes aren’t getting in the way.

Top priority for my son is time to use the brand new scooter that he just purchased for himself using birthday money and allowance money.

We have all kinds of other plans too, including soccer practices, soccer tournaments, swimming lessons, dance camp (for my daughter) and a family trip to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

We have never been anywhere near Cape Cod before, so if you have any advice, I will gladly take it!

In celebration of the children’s well-earned free time, I want to share a poem in their honour.

Note: The Sweet William flowers pictured above were given to me by the kind farmer at Spring View Farms, where we picked strawberries. I placed them in my recently thrifted green vase.

 The World’s Music

The world’s a very happy place,
Where every child should dance and sing,
And always have a smiling face,
And never sulk for anything.

I waken when the morning’s come,
And feel the air and light alive
With strange sweet music like the hum
Of bees about their busy hive.

The linnets play among the leaves
At hide-and-seek, and chirp and sing;
While, flashing to and from the eaves,
The swallows twitter on the wing.

The twigs that shake, and boughs that sway;
And tall old trees you could not climb;
And winds that come, but cannot stay,
Are gaily singing all the time.

From dawn to dark the old mill-wheel
Makes music, going round and round;
And dusty-white with flour and meal,
The miller whistles to its sound.

And if you listen to the rain
When leaves and birds and bees are dumb,
You hear it pattering on the pane
Like Andrew beating on his drum.

The coals beneath the kettle croon,
And clap their hands and dance in glee;
And even the kettle hums a tune
To tell you when it’s time for tea.

The world is such a happy place,
That children, whether big or small,
Should always have a smiling face,
And never, never sulk at all.

Chickpea Quinoa Orange Salad

With temperatures soaring, I don’t feel much like hanging around the stove for too long.

So, yesterday I prepared this simple summer salad, which features quinoa and chickpeas for a healthy and tasty vegetarian protein punch. I added dried cranberries for a sweet treat.
This light tasting dish makes a wonderful side dish, or use it as a main meal paired with a green salad. I served it with roasted asparagus as well as tofu slices quickly sautéed in a combination of Bragg’s (similar to soy sauce) and olive oil.

Thrifty Find

My recent trip to the Salvation Army store was my first thrift store visit in a long time, but it might prove to be a continuing fascination for me.

After I left, I couldn’t stop thinking about a stripey knit blanket I had seen there for $4.99. I didn’t buy it because we have so many blankets in our house, but I couldn’t help thinking I would like to put together a big basket of blankets for use around a campfire this summer.

So, I went back. But, of course, the blanket was gone.

No good woman would leave empty-handed though, right?
I did a quick tour of the shop, and came away with a few little goodies, the first of which I am showing you today.

Some of the ladies in my knitting club are making ponchos for their daughters. I decided not to do so, because I wasn’t sure my daughter would wear it. Of course, right after I came home from our knitting group meeting, I found my daughter wearing a poncho that my aunt had made her when she was a baby. Another moment of parenting guilt.

Anyway, I quickly spotted a retro-looking poncho at the thrift store. I wasn’t sure my daughter would like it, since it wasn’t pink or purple. For $1.99, I thought I would take a chance.

She spotted the poncho as soon as I walked through the door, and her face lit up. A little bit of my guilt alleviated.

I have a couple more small finds I hope to show you another day.

By the way, if you like the Princess Leia look, as my daughter does, do yourself a favour and get some of these bun makers. These have been a life-saver for me when preparing my daughter's hair for ballet class.

The first day that my daughter wore the poncho, her bff came over for a visit. She had just come from a tea party birthday celebration and she was all dressed up. I snapped these photos while the two of them were playing (until they got tired of my picture-taking and told me to stop).

They had a serious case of the giggles and I got a lot of blurry photos.

Here’s where I told them to get the giggles out with their silliest possible faces (above). After that, they gave me a couple of calmer shots.

October

While I do love the summer, there is something about cool weather that seems to renew my energy and inspire me to head outdoors. Over the years, my husband has often complained about my sudden urge to walk on days when snow swirls around us and wind whips our faces.  I came across a poem recently in my grandmother’s tattered blue poetry book that reminds me of how beautiful fall can be. While today was grey, dismal and rainy in my area, there are beautiful October days to come. It’s about time for a long walk in the woods, I think.

October’s Bright Blue Weather

O suns and skies and clouds of June,
And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October’s bright blue weather.

When loud the humblebee makes haste,
Belated, thriftless vagrant,
And Golden Rod is dying fast,
And lanes with grapes are fragrant;

When Gentians roll their fringes tight,
To save them for the morning,
And chestnuts fall from satin burrs
Without a sound of warning;

When on the ground red apples lie
In piles like jewels shining,
And redder still on old stone walls
Are leaves of woodbine twining;

When all the lovely wayside things
Their white-winged seeds are sowing,
And in the fields, still green and fair,
Late aftermaths are growing;

When springs run low, and on the brooks,
In idle golden freighting,
Bright leaves sink noiseless in the hush
Of woods, for winter waiting;

When comrades seek sweet country haunts,
By twos and twos together,
And count like misers, hour by hour,
October’s bright blue weather.

O suns and skies and flowers of June,
Count all your boasts together,
Love loveth best of all the year
October’s bright blue weather.

Strawberry Fields

My mom says my siblings and I only remember the bad things about our childhoods. It’s true that we have often focused on the negative, but I also have many fond memories, particularly of summer—family camping trips in our tent and later in our pop-up trailer, car trips to Nova Scotia and, of course, strawberry picking expeditions. Hubby and I carry on those traditions with our kids because I know that they too will remember them fondly one day, and maybe think mom and dad did one or two things right. So, last week, we packed the kids kicking and screaming into the car and travelled to Spring View Farms in Uxbridge, Ontario to take advantage of the oh-so-brief strawberry season. Despite my dear son’s reluctance to make the trip, he was transformed as soon as we arrived. He enthusiastically sampled the two varieties of strawberries, proclaimed one a favourite and began filling his basket. We came home with seven litres of hand-picked chemical-free strawberries.

The question then became what to do with all of those strawberries. I was determined not to let a single one go to waste. I was also determined not to put in a huge amount of effort. I began by making simple strawberry jam in my bread maker. It takes much less sugar than regular recipes and lasts three weeks in the fridge. I went on to make strawberry sorbet in my new Hamilton Beach ice cream maker. This I served with Tal Ronnen’s delicious Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake. You might recall that he was Oprah’s chef during her 21-day vegan cleanse. You can find the recipe, which is definitely one of his easier ones, at http://www.tastebook.com/recipes/2254775-Chocolate-Chip-Peanut-Butter-Cake. Ronnen suggests pairing the cake with berry sorbet. At first I thought it was a strange combination, but my family loved the yummy peanut butter cake with the sweet sorbet. I also froze a bunch of strawberries to use for smoothies on those early mornings when we don’t quite feel like eating yet. Of course, I also left some strawberries in the fridge for plain old eatin’. Once, when I was up in my bedroom trying to get in a few moments of reading, I heard the fridge open and close about ten times, as my son grabbed one or two strawberries at a time and ate them (unwashed of course).
Next up, raspberries.
