Father's Day Gift Idea - Sick in the Head by Judd Apatow

I've said it before - men are hard to buy for. Unless you have loads of money to buy them some fancy new big-screen television or a shiny set of golf clubs, you're probably pretty much screwed. If you're sticking with a slightly smaller budget (like mine), I have this suggestion for you. As one of his Father's Day gifts, my husband is getting a copy of Sick in the Head: Conversations About Life and Comedy by Judd Apatow.

This is a great book for guys (and girls too but right now we're focusing on the guys). After all, Apatow makes guy-friendly movies (and girl-friendly too, but right now...). The writer and director of the hilarious movies Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Apatow also produced one of my favourite comedies ever - Bridesmaids. (Let's hear it for the funny women!) Oh, and he wrote and directed Funny People and This is 40 too - more of my favourite comedies (each with a slightly painful dramatic side). The man brings actually funny, heartwarming comedies to Hollywood - which is pretty rare in my humble opinion.

Sick in the Head is a collection of intimate conversations between Apatow and very famous comedians - big names like Roseanne Barr, Lena Dunham, his wife Leslie Mann, Mel Brooks, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart and Eddie Vedder. Eddie Vedder? Okay, he's not a comedian, but I'll read any interview with Eddie Vedder. And so will my guitar-playing, music-loving husband. I went straight to that interview first and found that I loved the conversational tone of the interview - an honest chat between two experienced entertainers.

Before becoming a Hollywood bigwig, Apatow was a self-described "comedy nerd." At fifteen, he washed dishes in a local comedy club in order to see the performances for free. He interviewed comedy heroes like Garry Shandling and Jerry Seinfeld for his high school radio show. And that's what he's back doing for this book. In interviewing others, Apatow also reveals plenty about himself and the creative lifestyle.

Sick in the Head will be released on June 16th, so pre-order it now or head to the bookstore to get it in time for Father's Day on June 21st.

    1. We're not into the kindle stuff...yet anyway. But it would help us keep the house tidy if we had less physical copies for sure! Yes, getting rich off Amazon...ha ha. ;)
