Vegan Candy Cane Fudge Recipe (gluten-free)

This delicious vegan peppermint candy cane fudge recipe is so fast and easy to make! It's a must-have addition to our Christmas dessert tray every single year. It boasts a simple, incredibly tasty chocolate fudge base with a festive crushed peppermint candy cane topping.

Originally, I posted this vegan fudge recipe as part of a Christmas Cookie Week collaboration with other bloggers. Posting a whole week of vegan Christmas cookies at the time forced me to start my holiday baking early, which is a good thing! Truth be told, though, I tend to eat quite a few of the Christmas cookies before Christmas if I bake them ahead of time. Fortunately this vegan candy cane fudge recipe is so easy and fast to make that you can make it, eat it all and make it again...and again!

(I highly recommend them, decadent as they are.) 

This vegan candy cane fudge is especially easy to prepare if you line your loaf pan with parchment paper. All you have to do is heat up the ingredients in a double boiler or stainless steel bowl placed over boiling water. Then pour the rich chocolate fudge batter in the prepared loaf pan, sprinkle crushed candy canes on top and pop it in the fridge to set. That's it.

Like the peanut butter balls, this yummy treat is gluten-free. (Be sure to look for gluten-free candy canes.) Wrap a batch of this chocolate fudge up in a festive tin and you have a nice hostess gift for your vegan, gluten-free or sweet-loving friend! My husband and the kids agreed that this fudge is delicious, which is saying a lot because the husband doesn't give compliments that easily.

This festive vegan fudge has a pleasant hint of peppermint flavour and a nice crunch from the candy cane topping. No one will have any idea it's vegan, so you can confidently serve it to all of your guests, no matter their eating preferences.

Cut this tempting candy cane fudge into small squares to serve. It's not the kind of thing you normally want to eat a giant wedge of (it's rich with chocolatey flavour), but if you do, you can always grab some more. 

I like to cut up the fudge and put it in a cookie tin on layers of wax paper. Freeze it if you won't be eating your fudge right away. (You can eat it practically straight out of the freezer too.) Store it in the fridge for a few days if you want to nibble away at it. I actually prefer to keep this fudge in the freezer all the time.

This fudge is so easy to prepare! It's delicious, with a nice crunch of peppermint flavor. (No candy thermometer needed!) A great Christmas treat or hostess gift.

Vegan Candy Cane Fudge

  • 6 Tbsp margarine
  • 3 1/2 cups icing sugar (confectioner's sugar, powdered sugar)
  • 1/2 cup sifted cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp peppermint flavour
  • 1/4 cup soy milk
  • 2 peppermint candy canes

Line a loaf pan with parchment paper (or grease the pan with margarine).

Place the candy canes in a plastic sandwich bag. Crush them using a mallet or whatever you have on hand.

Put the margarine, sugar, cocoa, peppermint flavour and soy milk in a heat-proof mixing bowl or the upper part of a double boiler.

Place the bowl over simmering water and stir until smooth. Add a bit more soy milk if needed. When the mixture is smooth, pour quickly into the prepared pan.

Sprinkle crushed candy canes on top and press in gently.

Chill fudge thoroughly in the fridge. Cut into slices or squares.

  6. Would the fudge have to remain refrigerated?

    1. You can keep it out for the evening on a tray, but other than that, yes keep it in the fridge...or freezer. :) It stays more firm when it's cold.

  7. Can I use another kind of non dairy milk?

    1. Yes, for sure! Any non dairy milk should work. :)

  8. Hmmm. Sounds yummy. Would recipe work if I replaced the soy milk with coffee?

    1. You would have to try it to know for sure, but if you want coffee flavour I would blend milk and coffee together, ie. replace a bit of the milk with coffee. :)

  9. Would it be possible to use cane sugar instead of powdered or confectioner's sugar?

    1. That would definitely change the texture. Right now it's quite smooth. I'm not sure I'd risk it...
