Insta-Friday in real life, on the road

The weekend is coming friends! I hope you have something exciting planned. We are thinking about going to Veggie Fest, my hometown of Hamilton's first vegetarian, vegan and raw food festival. I am good with any event that is based on food! Admission and parking is free. Maybe I'll see you there!

Now for Insta-Friday, a review of the week using cell phone photos. I'm starting with last Thursday, when I attended my favourite annual basket warehouse sale. I am thankful that the seats in my little Matrix fold down, because I always end up needing the extra space at this sale. Cheap baskets ladies! The women go nuts (me most of all). My sister's birthday is in June, so the timing is good. She's getting baskets and accessories every year. The big item in the back is a storage unit/bench for my little girl's room.

On Thursday evening, we headed to Niagara Falls to see Russell Peters at the casino theatre. I wasn't actually a fan of his before, but my mom gets the tickets for free. He was indeed funny, but I'm glad I wasn't sitting in the front because interaction with the audience was a huge part of the show. Peters talks a lot about the Middle East and he made me realize I don't know much about that part of the world.

We enjoyed having a look at the Falls.

I also liked looking at the crazy t-shirts in the shop windows.

The kids did some hot tubbing.

On Saturday, we headed to Collingwood for my son's soccer tournament. On Sunday, we visited Blue Mountain Village. More about our travels can be found on The Weekend post.

As I mentioned on Sunday, we decided to climb the mountain. I was wearing sandals and carrying a purse. Not smart. My son and I made it, though, unlike my daughter. Check out her face...and that was at the beginning of the climb. My husband conveniently volunteered to go back down with her.

There's no rest for the wicked. Monday night was dress rehearsal for my daughter's dance recital. The recital ran Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Thursday was my son's rep basketball awards night. I am really looking forward to doing nothing tonight and hopefully putting the kids to bed on time. I have a few episodes of Mad Men to catch up on.

How will you be spending the weekend?

    1. Nope, just stuff to fill up the house with. ;)

I think we will go. It's just a bit of a drive for us.

      Have a wonderful weekend!

(I never sit in the front at a comedy show or a drag show... Way too embarrassing). :)

  3. We sat close to the front in a comedy show once and I was paralyzed with fear the whole time. You can always tell a newby by the stricken looks on their white faces.

    1. I can imagine! I would be the same as you. There was one older man that Peters kept speaking to. He didn't react at all at first. He remained stone-faced. Then he told Peters to shut up!

    1. It's funny. I hadn't been there since I was a kid so I didn't remember the place. My husband goes golfing there annually and he told me there wasn't much to see! Come on...it's beautiful! I won't trust his opinion anymore. ;)

  5. Jo, recipe for you to try. Saw on FB the other day.

NO FLOUR, NO OIL, NO WHITE SUGAR Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites

    Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups canned* chickpeas, well-rinsed and patted dry with a paper towel
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons (165 grams) natural peanut butter (can use PB2 from gym to make healthier, check your labels )
1/4 cup (80 grams) honey (agave would be amazing too!)
    1 teaspoon baking powder**
a pinch of salt if your peanut butter doesn’t have salt in it
1/2 cup (90 grams) chocolate chips

    * My can was a 400 gram can, 240 grams without the water, and I used all but a few tablespoons

** If you need grain-free baking powder, you can use 1 part cream of tartar + 1 part baking soda + 2 parts arrowroot.

    Directions:
    Preheat your oven to 350°F / 175°C.

Combine all the ingredients, except for the chocolate chips, in a food processor and process until very smooth. Make sure to scrape the sides and the top to get the little chunks of chickpeas and process again until they’re combined.

Put in the chocolate chips and stir it if you can, or pulse it once or twice. The mixture will be very thick and sticky.

With wet hands, form into 1 1/2″ balls. Place onto a piece of parchment paper. If you want them to look more like normal cookies, press down slightly on the balls. They don’t do much rising. Bake for about 10 minutes.

Yields about fourteen 1 1/2″ cookie dough balls.
*** Don't even try with regular peanut butter! They'll come out oily. You MUST use natural peanut butter. :)

    1. Thanks! He talks about so many different races, I found it interesting. He grew up not too far from here so I'm kind of familiar with the area he talks about in regards to his own family.

Hope you are enjoying the weekend!

  11. Oh! I bet the veg food festival was fun! I would have loved to go! The look on your daughter's face for the hike is priceless. I hope she had a good dance recital. I miss those years of dance. She danced for 7 years but stopped in Grade 7 because, well, something had to give. I also look forward to staying home in the evenings, but right now Tyler has training or Rugby every night and Hunter either has work or wants to go to the library to study for exams. No rest for the weary! Have a great Father's Day Jo! Angie xo

    1. The festival was good Angie!

Yes, my daughter can sulk with the best of them!

She loved the dance recital. She's not shy about it, which is great.

Sounds like you guys are busy. I know what you mean, the kids (and you) can't do it all. They want to try so many activities, but who has the time...or money?

      Have a wonderful day Angie!
