A Valentine's Day Garland

Inspired by this Valentine's Day rainbow heart banner that I found while surfing the net, I decided to hold a pre-Valentine's Day crafting party with my children.

A few days before, I had been to my daughter's Grade 3 class for a quilting session. That reminded me of how much the kids enjoy sewing things by hand. So, while the garland that inspired me was stitched on a sewing machine, I thought I would enlist the kids' help to sew our garland by hand.

I knew my daughter would be enthusiastic about the project, but sometimes my son needs a little push to get off the iPod and join in. I went out and bought heart-shaped bowls and snacks at the dollar store. When the kids got home from school, I told them that everybody who participates in the sewing gets to snack on goodies. That sucked him in.

Look at that lip. He's really concentrating.

Jolene the dog got involved too -- in trying to steal popcorn that is.

Tomorrow, I'll share more detailed instructions and some spin-off projects we decided to do another day. In the meantime, here's a video of my daughter explaining how the process works. {I have added the instructions and more heart projects here.}

Did you catch her brother mimicking her there? Sweet, huh?

We hung our slightly imperfect, but made with love Valentine's Day garland in the doorway between the kitchen and the family room.
