One Room Challenge Dining Room Makeover Week #5: Crown Moulding & Cabinet Paint

The "Before" - this room is long gone now!

It was glorious to have a whole weekend to dedicate to our One Room Challenge dining room makeover this past weekend. No sporting events to take the kids to - just uninterrupted painting and installation time. (Okay it wasn't entirely uninterrupted - that would be impossible - but we got in a good stretch of work hours.)

On Saturday, my husband installed the crown moulding while I painted the vintage china cabinet. He got a little help on the heavy lifting from our teenage son - Metrie's French Curves Scene II poplar crown is a lovely solid wood (and therefore a smidge heavy). Of all the trim, the crown moulding seems to be the most challenging to diy. To up the challenge factor, our dining room has two floor-to-ceiling boxes jutting out of the back corners (covering pipes). That made for some trickier additional cuts. Not to worry though. If a cut isn't perfection, that's what wood filler and caulking are for. In any case you'll never get to perfect because likely your walls and ceilings aren't entirely level. Ours certainly aren't. Nobody will ever notice.

He takes after me - we like to work in pajamas.

On Sunday, we measured out the panel moulding boxes. My husband cut and installed the trim for the boxes while I continued to paint the vintage china cabinet. And then Monday I continued to paint the china cabinet. Plus, I put together a few floral arrangements, as I look forward to accessorizing the room.

On Tuesday, I continued to... You get the picture. The china cabinet has doors, drawers and shelves and I'm also painting the interior a fun, surprise colour. It's taking me a while, but I hope it's going to be a striking piece that we will cherish and use well over the years. (It doesn't help that I painted a whole bunch of dog hairs into the undersides of the shelves on my second coat. That's when I learned not to work so close to the ground in a house with two dogs. Also, I should have turned on my work light to make the hairs more visible.) Anyway, I certainly look forward to having additional storage space for my vintage dishes!

If you read my update last week, you know I was choosing from three Fusion Mineral Paint grey colours for the cabinet. We selected the middle tone - Little Lamb. It offers a nice contrast with the darker grey wallpaper and links up well to the Benjamin Moore Gray Owl paint on the upper portion of the walls. Like the other Fusion paints I have used, it goes on beautifully - it's self-leveling, so as long as you don't leave any big drips it ends up looking really smooth and lovely.

What's Next?

All that remains now in our dining room makeover is to spray paint the cabinet hardware, patch the nail holes in the trim, touch up the paint where necessary, clean up the room (dust the lighting fixture and table, wash the hardwood floor), hang the curtain rod and artwork, fill the china cabinet and add accessories to the table. One week to go! We got this!
