With summer in full swing, I find it's helpful to keep the cupboard fully stocked with healthy snacks. With the kids involved in basketball camp, swimming lessons and soccer games, we are always looking for portable, easy-to-pack snacks to pop into a gym bag or purse.
That's why I love Snackbox. These curated boxes of gluten-free snacks are shipped across Canada from Vancouver around the 15th of each month. I recently received the July Snackbox in the mail. This special box was curated by Erin Ireland, a Vancouver local and a contributing food reporter for CTV Morning Live and Shaw TV's The Rush.
As a supporter of the local food community, Erin chose goodies from local and often family-owned companies. One of my favourites is Skeet & Ike's organic fruit and nut trail mix, perfect for a healthy grab-and-go snack.
I also enjoyed Powerplant's raw whole food fruit bar. This family-owned company produces raw, organic, vegan, gluten-free and peanut-free bars. The sprouting process used on their seeds increases digestibility. Oh, and the fruit bar is actually a dark chocolate and fruit blend, producing a nice, chocolate flavour - bonus!
My favourite type of chip is salt and vinegar, so I was happy to see Hardbite's Rock Salt & Vinegar handmade chips in the box.
One of the great things about getting a new and different Snackbox each month is that you get to try all sorts of snacks you might not otherwise discover, like Hippie Foods Coconut Chips. This nutrient-dense superfood is fresh young coconut sliced and roasted to create a chip-like crunch. I ate them straight from the bag, but you can also sprinkle them on fresh fruit salad.
Another favourite for me is Organic Lives Chocolate Macaroons. Each chocolate macaroon contains the equivalent amount of antioxidants as 2 cups of fresh blueberries. These macaroons are so rich and chocolatey that half in one sitting is enough for me.
For those who love orange-flavoured chocolate, Urge Chocolates makes this tasty "Oranji" handcrafted dark chocolate bar with goji berries. A small, local business in BC, Urge creates their bars by hand using fine Belgian chocolate. They recommend you pair this bar with white wine. I am liking that idea!
While many of the Snackbox goodies are dairy-free and vegan, some are not. The Cocolico Sweet & Salty Pretzel Snack Mix contains dairy, so it went to my husband, who loves a good pretzel mix. He also claimed Kitchening & Co's ginger chocolate cookies, which are made in small batches with quality ingredients like fresh grated ginger.
For my son's soccer tournament on the weekend, I popped a bunch of the Snackbox goodies into a picnic basket for an instant picnic. We threw some water into a cooler and we were ready to go!
