My Valentine's Day Wishlist & Where Canadians Stand on Valentine's Day Gifts

Valentine's Day is, in my opinion, more about spreading the love than exchanging big, expensive gifts. I do like to get a gift or two, but I'm happy with little things that say "I care about you." Besides, I like to leave some room in the Valentine's Day budget for takeout sushi. Not having to cook dinner is the best gift!

Here are a few inexpensive items that I would be happy to get for Valentine's Day (in addition to the gorgeous thrifted pieces I told you about on Tuesday). Pictured (clockwise from top left):

A relaxing bubble bath is a Valentine's Day weekend necessity. I'd reach for this Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Soy Candle in lemon verbena to ensure that my bathroom has a lovely natural scent.

Every occasion calls for my favourite chocolate bar - Go Max Go's Jokerz bar. It's vegan and free of artificial ingredients, but don't mistake it for low fat! This is a sweetly decadent treat, perfect for Valentine's Day.

It breaks my heart to think of dogs being left outside. I can't help but compare these unfortunate souls to my own two canine loved ones who love nothing more than to snuggle up in a ball on the couch with the family. If somebody were to buy a gift in my name, I would love it if it were a toy for a lonely backyard dog.

Despite my gigantic (largely unread) book collection, I am always happy to get another book. One that I'm looking forward to reading is Sara Gruen's new one, At the Water's Edge: A Novel. Gruen is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Water for Elephants: A Novel. At the Water’s Edge tells the story of Madeline Hyde, a young socialite from Philadelphia who reluctantly follows her husband to the tiny village of Drumnadrochit in search of the Loch Ness monster—at the same time that Hitler wages war against the Allied Forces. Sounds like a good one!

What Canadians Really Think About Valentine's Day

Consolidated Credit surveyed Canadians and discovered some interesting things about our Valentine's Day preferences. I am totally with the 91 per cent who would rather cuddle up on the couch and watch a movie than go out for dinner (haven't done that for Valentine's Day in years!)

As for that list of the biggest gifts purchased for Valentine's Day, let me just say a 12-pack of condoms? A bit more pushy than romantic in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend buying a boa constrictor either. And fyi, Canada Goose jackets often have coyote-fur collars. Not cool. A shiny diamond would be nice, but, if I were going to spend big money, I'd think about a trip down south.

Where do you fit into these Valentine's Day survey results? What gift would you like to get?

  1. Interesting survey! I'm happy to stay home and have some kind of meal cooked for me but that's not a reality because we don't have any local vegan places offering a delivery service. My daughter always asks what I want for a gift and my answer is always the same ("for me to have one whole day where you and your brother don't argue") and her answer is always "sorry, you have to choose something else").

    1. We don't really have a local vegan place, but lots of restaurants with vegan options.

Your daughter's response is hilarious! I hope you are having a somewhat peaceful day then! ;)

  2. Hahaha! Too funny (the survey, not the delightful goodies on your wish list)! We are a stay at home couple too-- only instead of movies its computer games (Borderlands the Prequel to be specific)!
