What I Ate Wednesday

We had some friends/relatives over to watch the Labour Day Classic game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Monday. For the "girls drink," I made this Christmas Cranberry Pimm’s Cocktail. It may seem odd to serve a Christmas drink in September, but this drink works fine for warm weather too. Plus, it comes from an Australian magazine. It's hot at Christmastime in Australia, right?

I had never tried Pimm's No. 1 before. According to the LCBO, it has an amber yellow colour, a citrus and herbal aroma, a smooth gin base, with a soft bitter herb flavour and citrus finish. Sounds good to me. The recipe calls for combining Pimm's No. 1 with cranberry juice, lemonade, apples, oranges, mint, lemons and cucumbers. It was quite fruity and tasty and makes a nice alternative to sangria.

This What I Ate Wednesday, I'm taking a peek at the foods I ate on Tuesday, most of which were leftovers/repeats of what we served to guests on Monday. I didn't have any of the Pimm's cocktail on Tuesday, though. I figured it wasn't an appropriate beverage for a work day (unless we're working Mad Men-style?)

I didn't photograph my breakfast bagel with peanut butter because, well, it was a bagel with peanut butter. Lunch was leftover broccoli pizza (my husband made a few pizzas, but this was my dairy-free one). I also had cucumber and tomato salad with an olive oil vinaigrette.

We served a fruit salad for dessert on Monday and I made up another for Tuesday's after-school snack. I used raspberries, strawberries, kiwifruit and green grapes. Monday's version also had cantaloupe.

I also had just a smidge (ha!) of leftover blueberry pie, topped with sorbet. Our friends had kindly picked up some pineapple sorbet for us at Ed's Real Scoop. They had been seeking vegan ice cream for me (so nice!) but the vegan alternative was sorbet. In any case, it was delicious. I had never tried pineapple sorbet before. It's fresh and light and lovely.

My sweet little girl has been browsing her children's cookbooks lately. (You hear that Mom? A third generation of cookbook addiction!) Last week she announced that she was going to make dinner and dessert a few nights this week. She started with a tofu and vegetable stir-fry over noodles. Of course, she needs help with compiling ingredients, measuring and using a hot stove, so it isn't exactly rest time for Mommy. But that's okay, she's only nine. I figure this means she will be cooking dinner on her own before she's a teen! The stir-fry was very nice and we were quite proud to have produced a tasty meal together. (And her brother even ate some! Bonus!)

How are you all doing with back-to-school time?
