5 Ways to Fire Up Your Relationship, With Sex Tape (The Movie) & A Giveaway

I am addicted to movies. I have seen more movies than I can count. My husband and I even took elective film classes together in university. Nowadays, however, we are more into lighthearted comedy than film noir. With the stresses of everyday life, it’s nice to kick back and have a good laugh.

Bad Teacher is one of our comedy favourites, so we’re looking forward to seeing Sony Pictures' Sex Tape, which once again pairs up the funny duo of Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. Sex Tape has a theme that many of us long-married folks are all too familiar with (well maybe not the sex tape part, but some of the other stuff).

Here's the official description:

When Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) first got together, their romantic connection was intense – and though they’re still very much in love, ten years and two kids have cooled the passion. To kick things up a notch, they decide – why not? – to make a video of themselves trying out every position in THE JOY OF SEX in one marathon three-hour session. It seems like a great idea – until they discover that their most private video is no longer private. With their reputations on the line, they know they’re just one click away from being laid bare to the world... but in their race to reclaim their video, they'll find that it will expose even more than they bargained for.

Sounds like an ill-advised plan to me. In the spirit of the movie, I did some research (I'm no expert, I needed the help) and put together a list of better ways to keep the romance going in your relationship.

5 Ways to Fire Up Your Relationship

1. Have regular date nights

We all know this, but do we do it? My kids are 12 and 9 and I can count on two hands the number of times we have used a babysitter over the years. But time alone as a couple is essential.

2. Communicate

When you are overwhelmed with your to-do list, it can be difficult to find the time to talk to your partner. Experts say you should make the effort to express your love and appreciation for one another. Which brings me to the next point...

3. Notice the little things

Everyone wants to feel appreciated. Make an effort to notice when your partner does something helpful, even if it's something simple like taking out the recycling bin. Gratitude enhances intimacy.

4. Take a road trip

It's hard to communicate when the kids constantly interrupt your conversations. If a trip to Hawaii isn't in the budget (I wish!), drop the kids at the grandparents' house and hit the road. A quick overnight at a nearby hotel (preferably with a hot tub, pool and room service) could be just the refresher your relationship needs.

5. Be attentive to your partner's interests

Maybe baseball isn't your thing. (Those games seem soooo long.) But, if your partner loves baseball, he's sure to appreciate you buying tickets to see his favourite team together. I guess this means I have to start listening when my husband talks about history...

There are plenty more, shall we say graphic, ways to heat up your relationship, but I'm not going there. You can always Google it.

For now, here is the official trailer for Sex Tape, in theatres July 18th.
