They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To

When I was in my teens and my twenties, most of the thrifting I did was for books. My then-boyfriend, now-husband and I used to find all kinds of cheap books in the basement of the Amity in downtown Hamilton. Back then, I stumbled across this strangely wonderful medical book. Published by Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, ILL., it's called "What's New: Special Christmas Edition 1953."

It's basically a report to the medical community on available drugs. But I can't imagine any company would produce a report with such flair nowadays. Those windows and door on the cover are actually cut out to reveal the picture underneath.

Even though it has a Christmas theme, it reminds me somehow of Halloween.

Maybe it's because this particular page, above, has flaps revealing five different layers of the brain.

I simply love the illustrations. The lighthearted pictures are paired with rather menacing text.

Climacteric  - a period in a man's life corresponding to menopause. You learn something new every day.

This particular page, above, notes that "Perhaps you can't make him forget food - but you can relieve the terrible urgency of his hunger with Desoxyn Hydrochloride."

This sweet image of a family on Christmas morning is actually an ad for vitamins.

What do you think? Do they make 'em like they used to?

  1. No they don't make em' like they used to. With some exceptions. TV shows, for instance, are MUCH better than they used to be. I tried watching some 80s tv shows for fun last month and ouch...horrible acting lol

  2. What a "fun" medical book! If we had some books like that today, we not even need Health Insurance ;) Linda@Wetcreek Blog

  4. So many shades of awesome!! The viral hepatitis one had me chuckling (like they called an emergency board meeting to discuss the outbreak-- what do they do at work all day? And the sunny yellow and jolly font-- so funny!) And the brain is actually quite artistic!

  11. I have to say, it's a really creepy book! My mouth was hanging open wider and wider with each illustration. You would never see anything like that today, it's probably worth a fortune!
