Just Because I Love Movies

Last week, when I showed you my newly thrifted tea for two set, I told you how I bought a bunch of VHS tapes at the library sale. I was rather embarrassed that I`m still spending money on old technology. But, dear as you are, many of you told me how you still watch and collect VHS movies too.

Emboldened by your support, I am now sharing a look at the VHS movies that I purchased at the library. Possibly you won`t be so nice to me in the future! Above, some classics I couldn`t resist: The Party, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and On Golden Pond. I remember how that last one brought on the tears.

I got these ones for the kids, although I`ll probably join in on the watching. Beethoven (picked out by my daughter), Star Wars movies and a couple of Indiana Jones films.

Something about watching classic Christmas movies on VHS just seems right. I guess we`re more nostalgic at Christmas time.  Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, It`s a Wonderful Life and White Christmas.

This is my random bunch. Six Days, Seven Nights because I remember liking it. Simon Birch for the kids because A Prayer for Owen Meany is one of my favourite books. Celebrity because it`s Woody Allen. I don`t even remember if I liked it. Autumn in New York because when it came out I heard it was terrible so I never watched it. Which goes against my policy of trying out movies for myself. Thirteen years later, I`m going to give it a try. Dinner With Friends - I just love that one.

What are some of your favourite movies? I could talk movies forever!

  1. I hope you guys enjoy your "new" movies!

Our VCR finally bit the dust about a year ago, so I resigned to donating all of our vhs tapes at that time. It was a hard parting, no lie. It was great to have the VCR when my daughter was little, b/c I could always find great kids movies at yard sales or the thrift for next to nothing.

  2. is it wrong of me to say that the only thing I remember about Six Days Seven Nights was cringing over the 'cold Anne Heche' scenes?

Go VHS, I have some of those on tape too :)

    1. I actually don't remember it that well. Now you are making me doubt that I liked it. ;)

  3. On Golden Pond is a classic - don't let anyone tell you differently. ;) Also, I just recently saw in an old post that your blog is named after Dan in Real Life -- one of my absolute faves! I love your blog even more now!

  4. I wasn't sure about including On Golden Pond as a classic to tell you the truth, but it's old and I liked it, so that's good enough, right Heather? ;)

I looooove Dan in Real Life. I have watched it sooo many times!

    Thanks Heather.

  5. I have friends who buy bags full of VHS on discount days, they don't have cable & it's cheaper than renting/buying. I used to buy VHS, but I donated the majority of my collection, keeping my favs: Tank Girl, Foxfire, The Craft, Ghost World, Welcome to the Dollhouse. I love Mean Girls.

    1. I would drop the cable and watch movies too, but my husband really wants to keep it. ;)

  6. I still have so many VHS....my nephews love coming over for sleep overs and picking out a movie. They carefully check it, make sure they are putting it in the VCR the right way and won't let me fast forward through previews. It's hilarious that kids with on demand movies get such a kick out of old technology!

    1. That's so funny! I put a VCR in the spare room so the kids could watch VHS movies there, but they never do! They watch TV or Netflix.

  7. VCR... wow, do kids even now what those are anymore? Gosh, the first VHS that came to mind was Pretty Woman but then you mentioned Christmas and we always watched The Grinch (the cartoon) on VHS... until we bought the DVD. Thanks for sharing!
