Kid Thrift

Last week, I told you about thrifting with my sister. For our first stop, at the Bibles for Missions store, my sister and I were joined by my niece, my husband and our two kids. The thing is, I warned the husband that we would be in the store for a good long while. My sister takes even longer than me to browse. But he wanted to come along. Of course, he ended up sitting in the car complaining.

We dropped him and the kids off at my sister's house before we went to the next two stores. My daughter did manage to find a few things at the Bibles for Missions shop though. She and I picked out these fabrics, above, thinking that we can either make doll clothes or do some kind of craft project with them one day (hopefully before she enters university in nine years).

She also picked out a "new" doll. She calls her "Ella" after one of her cousins. The dolls at Bibles for Missions are $3 to $4. The same type are $9.99 at Value Village.

That's what we paid not too long ago for "Brigitte." Still, most crappy plastic toys nowadays cost at least $10, so I figure what the heck. Does anybody know if any of these dolls at the thrift shops are actually worth any money? These two were made in China. Probably not a good sign.

We also got my girl this cute raincoat. She won't wear a raincoat often, but for $3 I think it's worth it.

This sweet floral and polka dot dress was also $3. I have paid full price for plenty of dresses like this one over the years.

Will you be visiting the thrift stores to add to your spring wardrobe?

  1. I just visited a store that was doing a 50% off all winter clothes and I was very pleased to note it included sweaters of all kinds. I picked up several light weight short sleeve cardigans for Spring, and found a skirt that is perfect for Easter. It was a great shopping day!

    1. That's so true Liz. It's nice to see blue now and then. She tends to go for all things pink. :)

  3. I wish we had better thrift stores in my area. I agree that Value Village is pricing their stuff too high. I recognize some items that are $1/$2 new at the dollar store, and V.V. sells them for $3. You found some cute things for your daughter. Wendy

    1. Oh my gosh, Wendy, I have seen the same thing there -- dollar store stuff for $3! They need to have us pricing stuff! ;)

The dress is also very pretty. I'd wear it if it were my size!

    1. Thanks! I have only done one sewing project, so we will see what I can do with the fabric. ;) I'd wear the dress too if it fit. Jo :)

  6. It is not often I love everything that someone buys but in your case, I adore them all especially the dress

  7. I love all of the things that you picked up. I have started doing more thrift/consignment store shopping (deciding to not buy an item new unless absolutely necessary).

I can't wait to see the doll clothes...hopefully you will be able to get them sewn before your daughter goes away.

    1. Thanks Rachel. Your idea is fabulous - only buying a new item if it's absolutely necessary. It's a great way to conserve!

I have to say I'm not very hopeful about making doll clothes anytime soon, but you never know. ;)

  9. I only buy kids clothes (and a lot for myself) at thrift stores now. When our Value Village has 50% sales on clothing, I pick up beautiful dresses like the one you bought for a couple of bucks. The only problem is a) my daughter now has so many dresses and b) she prefers to wear only a few of them because they're her favourites.

    1. Yes, but you find AMAZING clothes at the thrift stores. I don't see anything like it here. Like all your vintage dresses? Forget it!

I know what you mean. My girl has more clothes than she can wear too.

  11. Fantastic finds! That dress is just adorable {as are the dollies}. For the hubby, might I suggest a kindle fire? Mine brings his with him whenever we go shopping and inevitably ends up leaning against the racks surfing reddit while I peruse the goods lol

  12. Nice finds! I've never seen that type of doll in a thrift store. Ours are usually just full of grimy broken plastic toys. You found some adorable clothes, too. I wish I had the patience to sort through the thrift store clothes!

    1. Funny, I see these dolls all the time. I find it easier to sort through the kids' clothes. The adult clothes are mainly discouraging. ;)
